2026 Full Of Possibilities For Peace River (Shelly Shannon)

shelley-shannon-2

Her Worship, Mayor Shelly Shannon, says she is committed to working with other jurisdictions and organizations to strengthen relationships and identify solutions to key issues facing the community.

One major topic highlighted was the Utility Rates Bylaw. Council has approved a 5% increase for 2026 — half of what was initially proposed in the original rate model. Mayor Shannon says the reduced increase reflects public feedback and an awareness of the current economic climate.

Mayor Shannon also addressed adjustments to the 2026 municipal budget. Several major projects have been put on hold as Council responds to concerns from residents about the affordability of tax and utility rate increases. She noted that further spending and long-term planning will be re-evaluated as Council continues its new term.

Another topic addressed is the Out of the Cold shelter, operated by the Sagitawa Friendship Society. Mayor Shannon stated the parties are currently at an “impasse.” Council has requested Sagitawa review its operational model and consider potential changes, including the possibility of a dry shelter or measures to increase user accountability. Mayor Shannon emphasized that future discussions would depend on there being an “appetite for change,” which she says has not yet met Council’s expectations.

Looking ahead, Mayor Shannon expressed optimism for the year ahead, stating, “2026 is going to be an exceptional year for Peace River. I think you’re going to see a lot of movement, a lot of action, a lot of activity.”
