Easter Weekend Brings Increased Travel and Higher Costs

Heading into the Easter long weekend, residents across northern Alberta are preparing for a busy few days of travel and holiday gatherings. But this year comes with a few added considerations at the pumps and checkout lines.
Authorities are reminding motorists to plan ahead and prioritize safety, as highways are expected to see increased traffic. With many residents heading to visit family or take advantage of the long weekend, drivers are urged to check road conditions, allow extra travel time, and avoid distractions behind the wheel. Spring conditions can also be unpredictable, with changing weather and thawing roads creating additional hazards.
At the same time, the cost of travel has risen. Fuel prices have climbed in recent weeks, adding to the expense of long-distance trips.  Prices at the pumps in the region are in the $1.70 per litre range.  A far cry from the $1.30 range this time last year.
Easter traditions are also feeling the pinch. Chocolate prices are noticeably higher this year, up about 10% to 25% from recent years. This is driven by global supply challenges and increased production costs. As a result, shoppers are likely finding themselves paying more for popular treats like chocolate eggs and bunnies.
