Energy being boosted by Province

alberta-government-5

Alberta’s government is investing $28 million through the industry-funded TIER program to support six innovative projects aimed at enhancing energy production while reducing environmental impacts. These initiatives, part of Emissions Reduction Alberta’s Industrial Transformation Challenge, include:

– A Coaldale facility converting 130,000 tonnes of cattle manure into renewable natural gas annually, enough to power approximately 4,000 homes.

– In Calgary, Cnergreen Corp. is piloting ArmorFoam™, a nanoparticle foam designed to improve oil recovery efficiency and support permanent CO₂ storage.

– In Yellowhead County, Tourmaline Oil Corp. is testing carbon capture technologies on compressor engines at the Banshee Gas Plant to evaluate scalability and future sequestration opportunities.

– In Leduc County, the University of Calgary is advancing electrokinetic remediation to clean up inactive oil and gas sites by removing salts and hydrocarbons from the soil.

– In Edmonton, Ruminant Biotech is developing a new approach to reduce methane emissions from livestock, focusing on effectiveness, safety, and producer benefits.

– In Suffield, Total Containment Inc. is advancing the Envirolock® Pipeline Reinforcement System to prevent fractures in CO₂ pipelines, supporting future carbon capture, utilization, and storage infrastructure.

Projects in the Peace Region currently underway include one in High Level, and two at, or near Peace River.

These projects are expected to create approximately 1,035 jobs and add $166.5 million to Alberta’s GDP by 2027, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 260,000 tonnes by 2030.

Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, Grant Hunter, emphasized the dual benefits:

> “We’re increasing energy production and protecting the environment at the same time. The world wants our energy, and these technologies can help us deliver while lowering emissions and keeping our industries competitive for decades to come.”

This investment underscores Alberta’s commitment to responsible energy development and innovation.
