High Prairie woman pitches YAC to be homeless shelter

high-prairie-4

On January 13, 2026, Amber Fjeld, a newly graduated social worker, presented a bold proposal to the High Prairie town council: transform the former Youth Assessment Centre into a 24/7 homeless shelter offering integrated support services.

Highlighting the visible and pressing issue of homelessness in the community, Fjeld emphasized that without adequate shelter and support, individuals are left with no option but to occupy public spaces, placing undue strain on emergency services.

She argued that the existing facility, equipped with beds, showers, and counseling rooms, is ideally suited for this purpose.

Fjeld’s vision includes providing mental health and addiction support, as well as connections to income assistance and employment opportunities.

While some council members raised concerns about the building’s condition and potential hazards, the council acknowledged the community’s need and agreed to explore government funding to repurpose the facility.
